Starting Report Sections at the Top of a Row or Column in Access 2007

Microsoft Access, Tips & Tricks Add comments

Microsoft Access tutorial tweakIn the next section, “Creating a Multiple-Column Report,” you learn how to configure a report to use multiple columns. You will see that one of the options you can select is called Down, Then Across, which means that the records are printed down each column, and the columns run across the page. You can improve the readability of your report by forcing each new section to start at the top of the next column. (If you use the opposite column configuration-Across, Then Down-where the records are printed across each row, and the rows run down the page, you can then configure sections to always start at the beginning of the next row.) You do this by modifying the section’s New Row or Col property. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Open the report in Design view.
  2. Select the section with which you want to work.
  3. Choose Design, Property Sheet to display the section’s property sheet.
  4. Display the Format tab.
  5. Use the New Row or Col list to choose one of the following values:
    • Before Section-Choose this option to force the section to begin at the top of a new row or column.
    • After Section-Choose this option to force the next section to begin at the top of a new row or column.
    • Before & After-Choose this option to force the section to display in a new row or column by itself.
  6. Close the property sheet.
  7. Print preview the report to confirm that each section is formatted the way you want.
