You can create a numbered list of items by choosing the Home tab and then by either clicking the Numbering button or pulling down the Numbering list and clicking the style you prefer. However, what if you prefer to have an inline numbered list where the list of items appears in a single paragraph? Here’s an example:
prosumer n. A consumer who is an amateur in a particular field, but who is knowledgeable enough to require equipment that has some professional features (professional + consumer). A person who helps to design or customize the products they purchase (producer + consumer). A person who creates goods for their own use and also possibly to sell (producing + consumer). A person who takes steps to correct difficulties with consumer companies or markets and to anticipate future problems (proactive + consumer).
You could just insert the numbers by hand, but if the list is dynamic-either because you regularly add new items or move existing items around-it can be a pain to constantly renumber the items. You can get Word to handle the numbering for you by inserting ListNum fields at each spot where you want a number to appear. Here are the steps to follow:
- 1 Position the cursor where you want the number to appear.
- 2 Choose Insert, Quick Parts, Field to open the Field dialog box.
- 3 In the Categories list, click (All), and in the Field Names list, click ListNum.
- 4 In the List Name list, click NumberDefault. (You can also click OutlineDefault or LegalDefault for different list formats; see the table after step 5.)
- 5 Activate the Level in the List check box and then type a level number on the text box. Here are the default formats used by each list name:
- 1 If you want the field to start at a particular value, activate the Start-at Value check box and then type the number in the text box.
- 2 Click OK.
- 3 Repeat steps 1-7 for other numbers you want to add to the paragraph.

TIP
Rather than trudging through all seven steps to insert each number, there’s a shortcut method you can use. Insert the first number, but don’t specify a start-at value (the default is 1). In the docuÂment, select the number field and then press Ctrl+C to copy it. Move the insertion point to where you want the next number to appear in the list and then press Ctrl+V to paste the field.Word inserts the new number and increments it.
Each time you add a number, Word inserts a ListNum field with the following syntax:
{ LISTNUM Name \l level \s start }
Here, Name is the list name (such as NumberDefault), level is the level number, and start is the starting number (if any). Figure 1 shows two paragraphs with inline numbering-the first uses level 1, and the second uses level 7. I copied the paragraphs below and displayed the field codes (by selecting the text and pressing Shift+F9).

Figure 1 Examples of inline numÂbered lists-the bottom paragraphs show the field codes used in the top paragraphs.
