Ask anyone who uses Word extensively for a list of pet peeves, and one that will come up on almost every list is Word’s annoying habit of wiping out existing formatting when you apply a style to a text selection. For example, let’s say you apply the Emphasis character style to a text selection, and then you make the selection bold. If later you decide to change the character style to Default Paragraph Font, Word also removes the bold formatting that you applied. If you walk by someone’s office and you hear a growling sound, it’s probably because the occupant has just had Word blow away a bunch of carefully applied formatting.
Such frustrations may become obsolete in Word 2007, thanks to Word’s new Style Inspector. This is a pane that’s similar to Reveal Formatting, but has a simpler display. In fact, the Style Inspector shows just four things for the currently selected text:
- The paragraph style applied to the text
- Extra paragraph formatting applied to the text
- The character style applied to the text
- Extra character formatting applied to the text
This is useful information, but the real beauty of the Style Inspector is that each of the preÂvious four formatting displays also comes with a Clear button that enables you to remove just that formatting:
- Reset to Normal Paragraph Style-Resets the paragraph style to Normal.
- Clear Paragraph Formatting-Removes the extra paragraph formatting.
- Clear Character Style-Resets the character style to Default Paragraph Font.
- Clear Character Formatting-Removes all the extra character formatting.
These buttons enable you to be much more precise about what formatting you clear from a text selection. In the example I used earlier, where you applied the Emphasis character style and bold character formatting, you could have retained the bold by clicking the Clear Character Style button.
To work with the Style Inspector, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to open the Styles pane and then click the Style Inspector button. Figure 1 shows the Style Inspector pane and points out the buttons you can use.
