Opening a Form Automatically When You Load a Database in Access 2007
Microsoft Access, Tips & Tricks Add comments
It’s not uncommon in database work to have a table that serves as the focal point of a database. That is, the table contains most of the data and, aside from perhaps a few other related tables, most of your work in that database consists of entering and editÂing data in the main table and running queries (and, later, reports) on the table data.
In such situations, you probably have a form set up for entering and editing that table’s data, and it’s likely that the first thing you do each day when you load the database into Access is open that form. In that case, it makes sense to configure Access to disÂplay that form automatically when you start the database.
Note, too, that there are other ways that displaying a form immediately after launching a database is useful:
- You can display a splash screen that displays the name of the company, department, or project, along with a logo or other image.
- You can display a switchboard form, which consists of a collection of command buttons that perform tasks such as opening other forms or printing reports.
- You can display a list of instructions that covers how to use the database or what the database contains.
- You can display a summary of news or updates related to the database.
Here are the steps to follow to create a startup form:
- Create and save the form you want to use.
- Choose Office, Access Options to open the Access Options dialog box.
- Click Current Database.
- In the Display Form list, choose the form you want to display at startup.
- If you don’t want the users to also have access to the Navigation pane, deactivate the Display Navigation Pane check box.
- Click OK.
- When Access warns you that you must restart the database to put the options into effect, click OK, and then close and reopen the database.
TIP
Choosing not to display the Navigation pane at startup adds a bit of extra security to your database. However, what if you need to work with the database window yourself? Hold down the Shift key when you start the database to bypass all the startup options.
TIP
If you only work in a single database in Access, you still have to open that database each time you start the program. To save yourself a few startup steps, you can configure Access to always load the most recently used database at startup. Choose Office, Access Options to open the Access Options dialog box. Click Advanced and then scroll down to the Advanced section. Click to activate the Open Last Used Database When Access Starts check box and then click OK.
