Creating a Custom Blank Presentation in PowerPoint 2007
Microsoft Powerpoint, Tips & Tricks Add comments
When you choose Office, New, PowerPoint displays the New Presentation dialog box. In the Blank and Recent category, there is a Blank Presentation icon. When you click this icon and then click Create, a new presentation that uses PowerPoint’s default blank presenÂtation starts. This presentation has the following characteristics:
- It uses the Office Theme.
- It includes a single slide based on the Title Slide Layout.
TIP
You can quickly create a default blank presentation by pressing Ctrl+N.
This gives you a nice blank slate from which to get started. However, what if you always perform certain customizations when you start a new presentation? For example, you might always change to a particular theme, add a specific number of slides that use certain layouts, add an icon or logo to the Slide Master, set the footer text, and so on. Repeating these and other tweaks every time you start a new presentation is pure drudgery and a waste of valuÂable time.
One way to work around this is to configure your presentation the way you want and then save the results as a template:
- Choose Office, Save As to open the Save As dialog box.
- In the Save as Type list, click PowerPoint Template.
- Click Save.
CAUTION
When you choose PowerPoint Template in the Save as Type list, PowerPoint automatically switches to your user profile’s Templatesfolder. In Windows Vista, this folder is located at: %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
You may be tempted to save the template in a different folder, but I don’t recommend it. By storing your template in the Templatesfolder, PowerPoint automatically locates the template when you select the My Templates category in the New Presentation dialog box, as described later in this section.
To use the template, choose Office, New and click the My Templates category in the New Presentation dialog box. PowerPoint opens another New Presentation dialog box, which now shows a list of your templates (that is, all the PowerPoint templates in your user proÂfile’s Templates folder). Click the template and then click OK.
Templates are easy to work with, but there’s no doubt it’s even easier to work with the default blank presentation, particularly because you can create a new one just by pressing Ctrl+N. Fortunately, PowerPoint enables you to have the best of both worlds: a default blank presentation that you’ve customized to suit your needs. Here are the steps to follow to set this up:
- Configure a presentation with the formatting, slides, layouts, and objects that you want included in your future blank (so to speak) presentations.
- Choose Office, Save As to open the Save As dialog box.
- In the Save as Type list, click PowerPoint Template.
- In the File Name text box, type blank.
- Click Save.
