Consistency among your slides is a laudable presentation goal, but it’s not an absolute one. There is not a law that says you must make every slide look exactly the same. In fact, some of the most interesting and effective presentations I have seen apply different designs to groups of slides that are related in some way. Here are some ideas to help you get started thinking about this:
- For a budget or financial presentation, use a green color scheme on income-related slides and a red color scheme on expense-related slides.
- For a presentation that includes confidential or sensitive material, add “Confidential” or “For Internal Use Only” text to those slides.
- For a presentation that covers multiple products, place a small picture of the product on each slide related to that product.
- For a presentation that has two or more authors, display the author’s name, signature, or picture on each of the slides he worked on.
With these and similar ideas, it probably seems as though we are moving away from the efficiency and usefulness of the Slide Master. That is true if you are restricted to using just a single Slide Master for a presentation. However, PowerPoint lets you add other Slide Masters to your presentation. This means that you can format one Slide Master for one set of related slides, a second Slide Master for another set of related slides, and so on.
To create a new Slide Master, first choose View, Slide Master to open the Slide Master view. PowerPoint now gives you two ways to proceed:
- If you want the new Slide Master to be similar to an existing Slide Master, right-click the existing Slide Master and then click Duplicate Slide Master.
- To create a new Slide Master, choose Slide Master, Insert Slide Master (or press Ctrl+M).
CAUTION
PowerPoint keeps a new Slide Master in the presentation only as long as at least one slide is used. If you change all your slides to use a layout from, say, the original Slide Master, PowerPoint autoÂmatically deletes the custom Slide Master.To avoid this,choose View,Slide Master,click your cusÂtom Slide Master,and then click to activate the Preserve toggle button.This tells PowerPoint to keep the Slide Master in the presentation, even if it’s not used by any slides.
To use a layout from your custom Slide Master, choose Slide Master, Close Master View to turn to the Normal view. Click the slide you want to work with and then choose Home, Layout to display the gallery of layouts. As you can see in Figure 1, the gallery shows the layouts from both Slide Masters. (In this case, the Slide Masters are named Office Theme and Paper.) The layouts associated with the slide’s current master are displayed at the top. Note that you see a similar gallery if you click the lower half of the New Slide split button.
