Outlook enables you to quickly flag a selected message for follow-up by clicking the mesÂsage’s Flag Status field. This sets the default Today flag. For other flags (Tomorrow, Next Week, and so on), you have three choices:
- Right-click the message’s Flag Status field
- Click the Follow Up toolbar button
- Choose Actions, Follow Up
Despite the fact that Outlook offers several flag types, these flags have limited value because everyone tends to ignore them after a while, so the follow-up percentage tends to drop over time. If you have a message that requires you follow up, you can take things to the next level by setting a reminder. Here’s how it works:
- Select the message with which you want to work.
- Right-click the message’s Flag Status field (or choose Actions, Follow Up) and then click Add Reminder. Outlook displays the Custom dialog box, shown in Figure 1.
- In the Flag to list, click the reason for the flag (Call, Forward, Reply, and so on).
- Use the Due date calendar to click the date by which the follow-up must occur.
- Make sure the Reminder check box is activated and then use its associated calendar and time list to select the date and time you want Outlook to display the reminder.
- Click OK.
