If you import mainframe or server data into your worksheets or if you import online serÂvice data such as stock market quotes, you often end up with date formats that Excel cannot handle. One common example is the YYYYMMDD format (for example, 20070823).
To convert this value into a date that Excel can work with, first use the LEFT(), MID(), and RIGHT() functions to extract the separate date parts:
- LEFT(A1, 4) extracts the year (assuming the unrecognized date is in cell A1).
- MID(A1, 3, 2) extracts the month. Note that the syntax here is MID(text, start_num, num_chars), where start_num is the number of the first character to extract from text, and num_chars is the number of characters you want to extract.
- RIGHT(A1, 2) extracts the day.
Given these three date components-the year, the month, and the day-you can generate a proper date from them by using Excel’s DATE() function:
DATE(year, month, day)
year The year component of the date (a number between 1900 and 9999). month The month component of the date. day The day component of the date.
Plugging the date components into a DATE() function gives Excel a date it can handle:
=DATE(LEFT(A1, 4), MID(A1, 3, 2), RIGHT(A1, 2))
