Blocking Foreign or Non-English Messages in Outlook 2007

As I write this, the United States remains the number one spam-producing country in the world, generating about a 22 percent of all spam. Still, it means that the other 78 percent of spam comes from foreign countries (assuming you live in the U.S.), and much of that spam is written in a language other than English. The biggest non-U.S. spam generators are China, South Korea, France, Spain, and Poland.
This information can help you fine-tune Outlook’s Junk E-mail filter because you can block incoming messages that originate from a particular country. Outlook does this by using the top-level domain (TLD), which is the final suffix that displays in a domain name. There are two types: a generic top-level domain (gTLD), such as com, edu, and net, and a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), such as ch (China) and kr (South Korea). Outlook uses the latter to filter spam that comes from certain countries.
Outlook can also filter messages that are written in a foreign language. The character set of a foreign language always displays using a special encoding unique to that language. (An encoding is a set of rules that establishes a relationship between the characters and their representations.) Outlook uses this encoding to filter spam that displays in a specified lanÂguage.
Here are the steps to follow to block messages from specific countries and languages:
- Choose Actions, Junk E-mail, Junk E-mail Options to open the Junk E-mail Options dialog box.
- Choose the International tab.
- To block one or more countries, click Blocked Top-Level Domain List, activate the check box beside each of the countries you want to filter (see Figure 1), and then click OK.
- To block one or more languages, click Blocked Encodings List, activate the check box next to each of the languages you want to filter and then click OK.
- Click OK.
