In some cases, table data is invalid not because it’s the wrong data type or some numbers were transposed or the value is out of the allowed range, but because it’s missing altogether. When entering orders, for example, it’s important to make sure that the Customer and Order Date fields are entered (to name just two), while it’s fine to leave the Shipped Date field blank because that is filled in later when the order ships. Mistakes happen, however, and it’s easy for the data entry user to skip a field (for example, by accidentally pressing Tab twice).
For a field where the user must enter data, you can set the Required property to Yes. When you do this and the user tries to start a new record without entering a value in that field, Access displays a dialog box telling the user to enter a value in the field, as shown in Figure 1.

Here are the steps to follow to require a value for a field:
1. Open the table you want to work with in Design view (right-click the table in the Navigation pane and then click Design View) and then click the field with which you want to work.
2. Click inside the Required property.
3. Use the list to select Yes. (You can also toggle the property between Yes and No by double-clicking inside the property.)
4. Save the table.
