It’s probably safe to say that there are no longer any spam-free zones. If you have an Internet-based email account, then you get spam, end of story. And if you’re like most peoÂple, you don’t get just one or two spams a day, but more like one or two dozen (or, shudder, one or two hundred, which is, sadly, no longer an unusually high amount). That’s not surÂprising because spam now accounts for the majority of the billions of messages sent every day, and on some days, it even accounts for 90 percent of all sent messages!
It is no longer possible to avoid spam, but there are some things you can do to minimize how much of it you have to wade through each day:
? Never use your actual email address in a newsgroup account. The most common method that spammers use to gather addresses is to harvest them from newsgroup posts. One common tactic you can use is to alter your email address by adding text that invalidates the address, but is still obvious for other people to figure out:
user@myisp.remove_this_to_email_me.com
- When you sign up for something online, use a fake address if possible. If you need or want to receive email from the company and must use your real address, make sure you deactivate any options that ask if you want to receive promotional offers. Alternatively, use an address from a free Web-based account (such as a Hotmail account), so that any spam you receive goes there instead of to your main address.
- Never open suspected spam messages or display them in the Reading pane because doing so can sometimes notify the spammer that you’ve opened the message, which confirms your address is legitimate.
A Web bug is an image that resides on a remote server and is added to an HTML-formatted email message by referencÂing a URL on the remote server. (Images and other objects that reside on a remote server and are not embedded in the message are called external content.) When you open the message, Outlook uses the URL to download the image for disÂplay within the message. That sounds harmless enough, but if the message is junk email,it’s likely that the URL will also contain either your email address or a code that points to your email address. When the remote server gets a request for this URL, it knows not only that you’ve opened their message, but also that your email address is legitimate.
Fortunately, Outlook 2007 is hip to the Web bug menace, and it’s set up to automatically block any external content (including sound files). When you receive an HTML message with links to remote images,Outlook blocks the images and, for each one, displays instead a placeholder containing a red X and a message telling you that the image has been blocked. The Information pane also tells you that the message’s pictures have been blocked. If you know the message isn’t spam, you can view the images by clicking the Information pane and then clicking Download Pictures.
To make sure that Outlook 2007 is set up to block image downloads, choose Tools, Trust Center, click Automatic Download, and then make sure the Don’t Download Pictures Automatically in HTML E-mail Messages or RSS Items check box is activated.
