Many PowerPoint slides consist of a title and an object such as a picture, SmartArt diaÂgram, or other object. However, text is the meat of most PowerPoint slides, and that text almost always displays in the form of bullet points in a content placeholder. They are called bullet points because each paragraph of text is preceded by a symbol-a bullet-that’s offset from the text and serves to separate the paragraphs and focus the audience’s attention.
For a first-level bullet point, the standard bullet is a small, black, filled circle, but each PowerPoint theme comes with its own bullet style, which may be an arrow, a square, an X, or some other symbol. So the easiest way to customize your slide bullets is to apply a difÂferent theme to your presentation. (Choose Design and then click a theme in the Themes gallery.)
If you don’t want to apply such a drastic change to your presentation, you can also change just the bullets. You can choose another of PowerPoint’s built-in bullets, or you can choose a custom picture or symbol. Here are the steps to follow to change the default bullet styles in your presentation:
1.Choose View, Slide Master to display the presentation’s Slide Master view.
2.Click the slide master at the top of the Navigation pane. PowerPoint displays the default styles for each bullet level, including the default bullets.
3.Click anywhere within the bullet level you want to change.
4.Choose Home and click the Bullets arrow to display the Bullets list, as shown in Figure 1.

5. You have two choices:
- Click one of the predefined bullet styles. Repeat steps 3-4 to customize the other bullet levels. Continue with step 11.
- Click Bullets and Numbering to display the Bulleted tab of the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. Continue with step 6.
6.Use the Size spin button to change the bullet size as a percentage of the bullet text.
7.For bullets that are symbols (not pictures), use the Color palette to click the bullet color you want to use.
8.Click one of the following buttons:
- Picture-Click this button to assign a custom picture as the bullet. In the Picture Bullet dialog box, either click a displayed picture (make sure the Include Content from Office Online check box is activated) or click Import to use the Add Clips to Organizer dialog box to choose a custom image. Click OK.
- Customize-Click this button to assign a custom symbol as the bullet. In the Symbol dialog box, click the symbol you want to use and then click OK.
9.Click OK. PowerPoint applies the custom bullet to the selected level.
10.Repeat steps 3-9 to customize any other bullet levels you want to work with.
11.Choose Slide Master, Close Master View to return to the Normal view. PowerPoint applies the new bullets to your entire presentation.
