In Outlook’s default layout, the message list is located in the middle of the window and th Reading pane is on the right. This brain-dead layout makes the message list practically useles because it crams the message data—including the sender name (or address), the subjec line, and icons such, as the flag and categories—into a tiny, two-line rectangle—this i called compact mode. A much better arrangement is to have the Reading pane below th message list. You can set this up by choosing View, Reading Pane, Bottom
Tip: If you like the Reading Pane on the right, you can make compact mode easier to work with b increasing the number of lines that Outlook displays for each item. Choose View, Arrange By Custom, click Fields and then choose a higher number in the Maximum Number of Lines i Compact Mode list (the default is 2).
With that bit of business out of the way, the Inbox message list expands to reveal ten fields of message data:
? Importance—Shows the priority settings the sender applies to a message: High (a red exclamation mark), Low (a downward-pointing blue arrow), or Normal (no icon).
? Reminder—Displays a bell icon for messages for which you have set a due date with a reminder.
? Icon—Displays an icon that gives you information about a message’s status. For example unread messages show a closed envelope icon, read messages show an open envelop icon, messages you reply to add a left-pointing purple arrow, and messages yo forward add a right-pointing blue arrow.
? Attachment—Displays a paperclip icon for messages that have one or more files attached.
? From—Shows the name (or sometimes just the email address) of the person or organization that sent the message.
? Subject—Displays a message’s topic.
? Received—Shows the date and time you receive a message.
? Size—Shows a message’s size in KB or MB.
? Categories—Shows the categories you assign to a message.
? Flag Status—Displays the flag you apply to a message.
This is good information, to be sure, but it’s not the only information that Outlook maintain for each message. In fact, there are dozens of data fields for each message, includin useful fields such as Cc (the recipients who received copies of the message), E-mai Account (the name of the account to which the message was sent), and Sent (the date an time the message was sent). You can add any of these fields to the Inbox message list.
Here are the steps to follow to customize the message fields:
1. Right-click any field header and then click Field Chooser to display the Field Chooser dialog box, as shown in Figure 1.

Use the Field Choose dialog box to customiz the fields displayed i the message list.
2. In the drop-down list at the top of the dialog box, choose All Mail Fields.
3. Drag a field from the Field Chooser dialog box and drop it inside the field headers at the point where you want the field to display.
4. Repeat Step 3 for any other fields you want to add.
5. Click the Close (X) button to shut down the Field Chooser dialog box.
6. To move a field, drag its header left or right within the column header area and then drop it into the position you want.
7. To size a field, drag the right edge of the field’s header to the left or right or rightclic the field header and then select Best Fit (which sizes the field to be as wide as it widest entry).
8. To remove a field, drag it up or down until you see a large X display over the field and then release the mouse.
