Since its inception PowerPoint has featured an “AutoContent Wizard,” which is essentially a cookie-cutter step-by-step beginning for non-writers to begin to decide what their presentation should say. Many users still don’t even know it’s therewhile others seem to find it adequate for charting their presentation course and getting started.
- If you choose File > New in PowerPoint, the New Presentation Task Pane will open. One of the choices will be to create a new presentation From AutoContent Wizard.
- Click Next to choose a Presentation Type, and click All to reveal the full range of possible boilerplate presentations to begin with
- If we select Selling a Product or Service and click Finish, we can see an entirely constructed sample presentation. With the Slides tab selected, we can scroll through the presentation and see that there are a few slides with potential diagrams for visuals, but for the most part, the sample presentation is asking us to fill in lots of titles and bullets.
The very first slide is typical. You are asked to fill in some “Objectives,” and you may well be tempted to put in something like, “We really want to sell you lots of new stuff (that’s probably no better than our old stuff).”
Writing Better Bullets
- There’s a good reason why the items in PowerPoint slides are called bullets.Bullets are meant to express key concepts succinctly, and you (or the speaker) are meant to amplify these points and say interesting, profound, and meaningful things about the topic.
- The key element of bullets is breaking up unreadable material into manageable “thought-chunks.”
- There are many theories about how many bullets are appropriate for a slide, but the key thing to remember is that each slide should really be about only one topic, and the number of bullets shouldn’t exceed one-third of the square root of your total number of slides.
Taking into account that this is already the third slide at least we’re finally going to focus on the audience. We’ve also got a visual (the diagram in the slide) that we could conceivably use to illustrate some kind of needs structure or relationship.
The question becomes: Is this the best way to plan a presentation?
If you had limited time and resources, or if you were extremely confident that you had a surefire solution to whatever you perceived the audience’s issue to be, you could fill in the rest of the wizard-created presentation, and you would have a slide show.
But what happened to the AutoContent Wizard on Office 2007?
The AutoContent Wizard is not available in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. Instead, you can create your presentation quickly and easily by using templates (template: A file or set of files that contains information about the theme, layout, and other elements of a finished presentation.).Office PowerPoint 2007 templates include different themes and layouts, including most of those that existed in the AutoContent Wizard. Templates give you a starting point and make it easier to complete your presentation quickly. You can modify a template’s text and design, add a company logo, add your own images, or delete text or other content from the template
