When you open a new document, Word applies the font style, views, and so on found in the Normal.dot template. If you don’t care for the formatting and other options configured in the template, they can be changed. However, before you can do this, you need to know how to find the Normal.dot template.
If you are new to Word and do not know where the template is located, you can use these simple steps to find out.
1. Open Word.
2. From the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Select the File Locations tab.
4. Under the list of File types, select User templates.
5. Note the path to where the templates are stored.
If the full path is not displayed, click the Modify button. Click the drop down arrow beside the Look In field. You can then note the location of the template. By default, the location should be c: \ Documents and Settings \ username \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Templates
Now, do you need to adjust the default margins and change the font every time you open a Word document in order to conform to your organization’s requirements? Save time by having Word do it for you.
First, back up the Normal.dot template in a directory other than the Template directory on your disk or server. Then, follow these steps to create a Normal template that conforms to your organization’s standards:
1. Open a new blank document.
2. Go to Format | Font.
3. Make the requisite font changes and click the Default button.
4. Click Yes and then OK.
5. Go to File | Page Setup.
6. Change margins as required and click the Default button.
7. Click Yes and then OK.
Now when you open a document, it will take on the format changes that you created in the Normal template. If you wish to reset the Normal template to its defaults, rename the Normal.dot file (for example, MyNormal.dot) and then restart Word. When Word restarts, it will automatically create a new Normal.dot template with your default settings.
