When you’re developing several files related to a single project, it’s handy to change the default folder path that the application displays in the Open and Save As dialog boxes. You can specify that a particular folder be automatically displayed to avoid wasting mouse clicks navigating to a specific document location.
Say for the next week you will be preparing a set of important documents and you are on a tight deadline. You can have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint open automatically into a folder you specify instead of the My Documents folder (the default file location) whenever you need to open or save a related file. This might not seem like a big deal, but if you are opening and saving numerous files for a project, you can actually save a lot of time by not having to navigate the folder hierarchy. After all, degunking is often about making subtle changes that pay back big over time.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint each offer a Default File Location option that you can customize; however, each is stored in a slightly different place in the Options dialog box. To change the default file location, follow these steps for Word, Excel, or PowerPoint:
- Choose Options from the Tools menu.
- In the Options dialog box, do one of the following:
- In Word, select the File Locations tab. In the File Types list, select Documents, and then click Modify. In the Modify Location dialog box, navigate to the folder you’d like Word to use and click OK.
- In Excel, select the General tab. Type the path name of the location you’d like to use as a default in the Default File Location text box.
- In PowerPoint, select the Save tab. Type the path name of the location you’d like to use as a default in the Default File Location text box
- Click OK in the Options dialog box to apply the changes.
TIP: If you switch projects and find it’d be more useful to have Word, Excel, or PowerPoint automatically open a different folder when you select Open, Save, or Save s from the File menu, repeat the preceding steps and designate a new folder as the default file location.
