An important market factor is “buyer behaviour”; how do buyer’s want to purchase the product? Do they prefer to buy from retailers, locally, via mail order or perhaps over the Internet? Another important factor is buyer needs for product information, installation and servicing. Which channels are best served to provide the customer with the information they need before buying? Does the product need specific technical assistance either to install or service a product?
This is where you should begin to think carefully about your Channel Strategy.
Channels are the means by which you sell products to your customers. Channel strategy helps identify those sales channels and processes that yield the highest return for your company. Channel strategy includes recommendations for both identifying and managing channel partners.
Channels are more sales management than sales. How you interact with the channel will determine your mindshare and their loyalty.
You have to be clear what you are trying to accomplish with a channel program. Simple answers such as “More feet on the street†are not sufficient. Some companies build channels for user support, some for competitive geographic coverage, some to address user buying preferences, some to stuff product, etc. Unless you are clear about what you want from a channel, chances are you will end up with a mixed bag of resellers and sub-optimal results.
