The balance sheet has served business managers since its inception in 1868 as a way to summarize the results of double entry accounting. It is the most familiar financial tool the world over and the first building block in a financial education. The elements used to construct a balance sheet and present it in a report are standard across all industries, businesses, and geographies. In many ways, this familiarity has caused the balance sheet to be under appreciated
The Projected Balance Sheet measures the growth of the business over a particular period, usually a year. It shows where the money came from (share capital, generated profit, loans, etc) and on what it was spent (fixed assets, stocks, debtors, cash reserves, etc) over a given period.
It sets out your assets and liabilities to show the net worth of your business. Assets owned less liabilities owed equal the net worth of your business. By arranging the items in a balance sheet into different groupings, it is possible to understand a great deal about your own business and how it compares with other similar businesses.
You can use this excel Projected Balance worksheet to prepare the balance sheet you will include in your business plan. Yours may have slightly different categories depending on the type of business. Use a similar format to prepare pro forma (projected) balance sheets
