The Case:
Garr Reynold said in one of his thoughtful post said that design is not a matter of right or wrong and good or bad. It’s better to think design in terms of what is “appropriate or inapropriate”. That is, is it appropriate or inappropriate for a particular context?
But still, I believe there are some guidelines we can use to make a good slides design.
Tune Up:
If the ideas is to make a non-boring presentation, there are some tools you can try, such as Ovation from Adobe. But I want to start from the basic;
1. Use non-default fonts.
Don’t use times new roman, it’s too boring and is tend to harder to read on the slides, compared to Arial for instance. Choose font like Impact for the title, and font like Calibri or Arial for the content. You can experiments with other fonts, but remember that you have to align them with the overall template design, and choose the ones which are readable from a distance.
2. Be colorful.
Don’t use a boring black and white. There are some reference claiming that you should choose only black and white color to show that you are a professional. That’s a bull. Even old-guard newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times eventually decided to go to color. We are capable to see millions of different colors, why should we be happy with only black and white when we can actualy have even more.
But take caution on this one. Dont blend the text color with the background. As a rule of thumb, use light text color on a dark background or a dark text on a light background. Avoid the use of Red text since it has tendency to blend with the surrounding colors. You can use it to emphasize, but only for a one or two words only. And be caution not to use contrasting colors; colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel such as red text on a green background. This will put a strain on the muscle of the eye.
3. Construct paragraph integrity.
State your points based on their importance. Use different size and even color for the 1st and 2nd level paragraph. This will create pattern that will help your audience to grap the information on the slides faster. Don’t go beyond the 3rd level, since it would tend to be smaller than 20 points.
4. Feed the right-brain.
We feed our audience left brain with speech, text and numbers. Don’t let their right brain in hunger; feed them with colors, graphics, shapes and patterns. Use some coherence and non distracting pictures and illustrations. You might want to buy some nice illustration from pointclips. You can even make your own illustration, even if you can’t draw.
Furthermore, keep the word count down. You will only make the audience struggle to read them. And you know what, while they are reading, they are not looking at you and your speech. Put the pictures on the slides, and put the words on your speech.
